What is PAYE?

Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) is the system South Africa uses to collect income tax from salaried employees. Rather than paying one lump sum at the end of the tax year, your employer deducts tax from your salary every month and pays it to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) on your behalf, based on your projected annual income.

Your employer also deducts a 1% Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contribution, capped at R177.12 a month, and matches it with an equal contribution of their own.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PAYE calculator accurate for 2026/2027?

Yes — the calculator uses the official SARS tax brackets, rebates and UIF ceiling for the 2026/2027 tax year, and lets you switch to other years too. It's an estimate of standard PAYE and UIF only; it doesn't include retirement annuity contributions, medical aid tax credits or travel allowances, which can lower your actual tax. See the methodology page for the exact formula.

Do I need to enter my ID number or personal details?

No. The calculator only needs your monthly salary, age group and tax year — nothing is stored, and no personal or identifying information is ever requested.

What's the difference between PAYE and UIF?

PAYE is income tax paid to SARS. UIF is a separate 1% contribution (capped monthly) that funds unemployment, maternity and illness benefits. Both are deducted from your gross salary, but they go to different places. Read more in our UIF guide.

Why is my payslip's PAYE slightly different from this estimate?

Small differences are normal. Your employer's payroll system may also factor in retirement fund contributions, medical aid credits, travel allowances, or a mid-year adjustment carried over from a previous period — none of which a simple salary-only calculator can see. For the exact assumptions this tool makes, check our methodology page.
