What is PAYE?
Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) is the system South Africa uses to collect income tax from salaried employees. Rather than paying one lump sum at the end of the tax year, your employer deducts tax from your salary every month and pays it to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) on your behalf, based on your projected annual income.
Your employer also deducts a 1% Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) contribution, capped at R177.12 a month, and matches it with an equal contribution of their own.
